Foundation of Mental Strength - Know Thyself
Before we apply the tools and strategies of Mental Strength Training, I believe the most important thing we need to do is develop self awareness. When we do the inner work of knowing ourselves we are much more likely to be able to develop/choose training tools that best suit us. We can cut to the heart of what makes us tick and what we need to take our performance to the next level.
So where do we start?
Here....
Who am I?
1.Values
Values serve as an (internal) compass to guide our (external) actions. When we create awareness of what values we live by we form a framework and a guide to focus our behaviours. For example if you value health but do not practice that value with your behaviour then you lose your health. If you value competition how does that reflect the way you play/approach your sport?
Knowing and daily practice of our values is where we start.
An effective way to get started in what will turn out to be really deep work of self, is your values. What are your top 5 values?
What drives your behaviours? What do you fight for? Who are you? What is deeply important to you? What guides your decisions?
“Values are who we want to be and what we want our lives to be about. Moreover, values are very individual. They are not based around what others expect of us, or what we think we should be doing.” Acceptance Commitment Therapy
